Once a prosperous cotton farm, the Brentwood neighborhood was annexed by the City of Austin in order to establish Brentwood Elementary and Park in 1951. The neighborhood is cut in half by a wide creek that runs throughout the subdivision. The elementary school and park are still very much in use and span over nine acres which offer residents a swimming pool, playscape, tennis and basketball courts, and a baseball field.
Brentwood is home to many Austinites's favorite local haunts including Threadgill's, a soul-food favorite of musician Janis Joplin when she attended the University of Texas. The neighborhood also offers the original 1930's Crestview Shopping Center complete with an IGA supermarket, barbershop, seasonal snow cone trailer, pharmacist, dry-cleaners, and Little Deli, one of the best family-owned restaurants you can find.
Residents of Brentwood take pride in their neighborhood and the quaint, well-kept 1930's and 40's bungalows are distinctly Central Austin. Neighbors like to celebrate with each other through many planned annual events like the Violet Crown Festival which takes place every spring and features local artists, craftsmen, and musicians who all come to celebrate the Brentwood lifestyle under the shady oak trees of Brentwood Park.
Brentwood is serviced by the Austin Independent School District where students attend Brentwood Elementary, Lamar Middle School, and McCallum High School.
